President’s Message:

I am honored to become your new SBHA President and want to thank Past Presidents Bette Harris and Jackie Raymond for their invaluable mentoring and enthusiastic support. I promise to continue the work of SBHA to make our community a better place to live.

One of my goals this year is to grow our membership to include more multi-family renters and homeowners. If you would like to become involved in our organization, please be sure to attend our February 26th meeting. Introduce yourself to me and to our board members!

I look forward to working with you!

Jackie Raymond serves as the SBHA Representative on the Brentwood Community Council. Marylin Krell has replaced Bette Harris as the Alternate. The BCC meets regularly on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Brentwood Kaufman Library.

REVISED BY-LAWS – Members are asked to review the revised By-laws recommended by the Board, posted on www.southbrentwood.org . A vote will be taken at the Annual Meeting.

PUBLIC SAFETY

Earthquake Preparedness – The BCC Public Safety Representative, Ray Klein and his wife, Roberta gave an informative presentation to SBHA members this past fall on the Southern California Shake Out and Earthquake Preparedness. Visit www.shakeout.org for information on how to prepare, and videos depicting what to expect in a “big one.”

Burglary/Theft from Motor Vehicles – Still the most prevalent crime in our community. Lock your car doors, and do not leave anything in view that might tempt a passer-by.

Scam Alert:

Sr. Lead Officer Phillip Enbody issued a Scam Alert in response to recent complaints. He warned that if anyone receives an unordered package delivered to his/her home, the resident should contact the business that sent the item, and follow the directions given. If the resident’s credit card number was used fraudulently to order the item, the victim should go to the police station and make a report. If the victim sees the suspect pick up the item from the victim’s residence, he/she should call 911 and give police the information.

WHAT DOES SBHA DO?

SBHA serves as an advocate for the interests of South Brentwood regarding public safety and quality of life issues. In addition to working through the BCC, SBHA leaders attend and testify at hearings, write letters supporting our community’s position, and maintain close contact with elected officials to ensure that our voice is heard and our needs are met.

Here are a few examples:

Parking – SBHA is vocal in asking that new businesses in our neighborhood have a satisfactory parking plan to ensure that employees and customers do not park on residential streets.

Traffic – SBHA does its part to prevent additional traffic by being involved in the public process when development projects are proposed. SBHA also works with LADOT (Los Angeles Dept. of Transportation) to make recommendations for improvements such as left-turn arrows and traffic signs to promote safety and smooth traffic flow. Additionally, SBHA encourages the use of public transportation.

WEST WILSHIRE BOULEVARD COMMUNITY DESIGN OVERLAY DISTRICT provides design guidelines and standards on West Wilshire Boulevard, which enhance our quality of life. Residents had complained that intense light from the Wachovia sign was visible from their bedroom windows at night. SBHA and BCC Chairwoman Wendy-Sue Rosen worked with the Council Office to have this corrected based on these standards.

OVERSIZED VEHICLE ORDINANCE is currently in effect in South Brentwood. Councilman Rosendahl was instrumental in designating South Brentwood as part of the program in response to numerous complaints from residents regarding the number of oversized vehicles parked regularly overnight on our streets. The ordinance prohibits vehicles in excess of 22 ft. in length and 84 in. in height from parking between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.

BASELINE MANSIONIZATION ORDINANCE – Because of the prevalence of small lots in South Brentwood, SBHA fully supported this ordinance, which limits the building of oversized “McMansions” on small lots. The ordinance represents a fundamental change in the City’s zoning code, and it helps preserve the character of our neighborhood.

DO YOUR PART….RECYCLE!

by Marylin Krell

Let’s do our part to help President Obama create a better, cleaner world!

Did you know that one person generates 2.4 pounds of garbage each day and more than half of it could be recycled? Did you know that recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours?

Did you know that multifamily homes can now recycle for FREE? To date, there are over 540,000 privately served multifamily units in the city. Only about half are recycling! Junk mail, newspapers, phonebooks, clean and empty glass and plastic bottles … and more can be recycled. For more information, go to www.larecycles.org or call Multifamily Recycling at (213) 473-4142 to obtain a blue bin and arrange for pickup. (You will need to provide your address, number of units, contact, bin location, and access information.)

Did you know that there is a nearby source for recycling hazardous waste including paint, electronics, batteries, hair spray, nail polish and cleaning products? Located on the UCLA campus at 550 Charles E. Young Dr. West (off of Gayley), the Collection Center is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday between 8 am and 2 pm. For more information call (800) 988-6942, or go to www.lacity.org/san/index.htm. They even have a Kids Page!

At our Annual Meeting on February 26, City of Los Angeles recycle guru Neil Guglielmo will tell us all we need to know about recycling. Please be sure to attend!

BRENTWOOD GREEN – The Brentwood Science Magnet School campus becomes a park open to the public, after school hours. Enjoy the recreational equipment, handball wall, basketball hoops, and jogging track after school and on weekends. Please note, no pets, bicycles, roller skates, or scooters allowed.
