South Brentwood Support for Palisades Vendors
Following the Palisades fire, the Brentwood Farmers Market expanded onto San Vicente Blvd. between Gretna Green and Bundy to make space for vendors from the Pacific Palisades Farmers Market. A lane on San Vicente has been closed during the market on that block to make it safer for these vendors.
The same management team runs both farmers markets so this expansion also helps them replace some of their lost income while the Palisades market is shut down. The expansion is meant to be in place until the Pacific Palisades market can start again.
Some Brentwood residents north of San Vicente complained about the lane closure on San Vicente because caused traffic to back up during the Farmers Market and they wanted the expansion to end.
SBRA sent out a poll in our South Brentwood News email newsletter and South Brentwood residents who responded overwhelmingly supported allowing the Palisades vendors to remain so that they can continue to earn a living. Residents also noted that many Palisades residents were coming to the Brentwood Market and seeing the vendors gave them a piece of their community in tragic times.
SBRA sent a letter to the Council Office supporting keeping the Palisades vendors in Brentwood until the Pacific Palisades market can reopen and spoke to market representatives and other Brentwood groups as well. We supported having conditions on San Vicente that are safe for pedestrians and vendors including that the City or Farmers Market provide a traffic control officer (TCO) to stop drivers from stopping to drop off passengers in the single lane that is available.
Don’t Feed the Coyotes
We’ve seen an increase in the number of coyotes since the Palisades fire, but unfortunately some of this is caused by South Brentwood residents who feed them.
Feeding the coyotes creates a public safety hazard – particularly to young children and pets. Leaving out food encourages them to come into the neighborhood and makes them less afraid of humans.
Feeding them also violates LA Municipal Code section 53.06.5(a): “No person shall feed or in any manner provide food or cause to be fed any non-domesticated mammalian predator including, but not limited to, coyotes, foxes, possums, raccoons and skunks.”
The City Attorney will issue citations with fines to people who violate this code through the ACE (Administrative Citation Enforcement) Program.
If you are aware of homes where coyotes are being fed you can contact the Brentwood and West LA Field Deputy in the Council Office or send a note to info@southbrentwood.org or mail it to us at 149 S Barrington Ave, #194, Los Angeles, CA 90049 and we’ll pass it along.
Please Help Save the Farmers Market
The Farmers Market is at risk of being shut down because of patrons bringing their dogs into the market.
Under California Health and Safety Code 114259.5 , Certified Farmers Markets are considered Permitted Food Facilities and the code stipulates that “customers shall not bring any live animals into any food facility” with the exception of service animals. Emotional support animals, adorable puppies, and well-behaved pets are not service animals under California state law.
The Farmers Market --- not the individuals --- is responsible for paying all fines, and is at risk of being shut down if Brentwood residents and visitors continue to bring their dogs.
Many dog owners are harassing the Farmers Market staff and security who ask them not to bring pets into the market and are walking in anyway despite the very large signs that have been posted.
Please help out the Farmers Market staff by leaving your pets at home when you go over there and asking others to do the same. All of us who love having this weekly market need to protect it so we don’t lose it.
Neighborhood Group Sets up Contract with Elite Security
A group of neighbors asked SBRA to help promote this initiative. SBRA is not a part of the effort. Please contact the group if you want more information.
**Join Our Neighborhood Patrol and Keep South Brentwood Safe!**
Did you know residential burglaries in Brentwood have increased by 45% from last year? In response to this alarming trend, many of your South Brentwood neighbors have collectively hired a 24/7 armed private patrol to protect our community. In only a month, the patrol has already achieved remarkable results. Now is the time to join in and ensure your safety, too.
Examples from the patrol this month:
Responded in under a minute to a trespasser alert in a client's backyard. The trespasser was followed out of the neighborhood and hasn’t returned.
Alerted authorities to a stolen car in our neighborhood and had the vehicle towed away.
Successfully moved several unhoused individuals from clients' properties.
Responded in under a minute to false alarms, providing peace of mind for when there is a true emergency.
Most importantly, there have been **no break-ins** in our neighborhood since we hired the patrol. However, the patrol can only assist those under contract with them due to insurance limitations—so it’s important to join the effort. Each home that joins lowers the monthly cost for everyone.
